Movie review: Star Trek Into Darkness

By Elie - 7:34 AM

Live long and prosper, all! Here's a movie I never thought I would quite enjoy and it is none other than Star Trek; Into Darkness! Of course, tickets were all thanks to Nuffnang for the Nuffnang Premiere Screening of Star Trek Into Darkness!

Woohoo to cool tickets like these!

Truth be told, I've never watched any of the Star Trek series and in fact have no idea what Star Trek really is. I mean, is it supposed to be the same as Star Wars or something? Heck what is Star Wars all about besides having a man in black going, "I am your father" over and over? But whatever it is, I still pushed my luck and went on to watch this movie and I must say I don't regret any of the minute that I did.

So what is Star Trek Into Darkness all about? It's a movie set in the future not too far from where we are today in what is supposed to be Earth as we know it. It follows the story of Captain Kirk and first officer Spock when they are forced to reveal the U.S.S Enterprise to a native planet known as Nibiru and Kirk gets demoted from his position to a first officer to Admiral Pike instead. Shortly afterwards though we see a villain known as John Harrison emerging from nowhere and then running off to a planet known as Klingon after killing Admiral Pike; which angers Captain Kirk and pushes him to regain power over the U.S.S Enterprise again just to catch Harrison. Of course then there's a huge conspiracy theory behind this fight and...the rest you should just go on and watch yourself.

Hotness level for a captain goes HUBABABABABA!!!

That's right. Chris Pine takes on the role of Captain Jim Kirk (in which according to Wikipedia is a reprising role from the previous Star Trek franchise but as I've mentioned previously, I hardly know anything of Star Trek much less watch any previous movies of it) and does a mighty fine job of it. His emotions are a little raw but there is a good sense of balance of appearing powerful enough to be responsible for his crew and also a point of breaking the rules of the Starfleet in order to save some lives. And being really attractive is a great plus point to Chris Pine making the whole movie such a pleasant watch over the 2 hours.

I'm sorry I couldn't find a picture that makes Zachary Quinto acceptable enough except this one!

Meet Spock or "Pointy" or the Vulcan or simply put, Zachary Quinto! (While noticing Chris Pine behind him hohoho!) Quinto puts up a great act as Spock, making you believe that he is indeed as innocent as the Vulcans are supposed to be especially when he seems to abide to all rules. Screen times for Quinto are quite sufficient to make you feel like he is indeed involving from a mere Vulcan who feels nothing yet becomes one who feels something; especially in one of the final scenes. That aside, what is with his hair and those elf ears? Is it a Vulcan thing? Enlighten me, Star Trek fans!

It should be illegal that villains be made so hot!

Honestly though, who casts a handsome guy as a villain? Does it make it harder to kill them off later? Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of John Harrison - or better known as Khan in this movie as an initial antagonist turned protagonist slash living with an antagonist in him. I...think I just lost myself somewhere there. Indeed he makes for a pretty good villain-ish quality but there were points that I no longer knew if he was someone from the good side or someone from the dark side. Nevertheless it was still a good show from Cumberbatch, rendering endless hatreds at some point in time and possibly a sigh of relief when he turned around for the better. Are you catching my flow here? Nevermind.

As a whole, Star Trek Into Darkness is actually a great movie to watch although it runs for about 2 hours. But it's fine because you don't really feel the hours going by when you get in awe at the amount of visual graphics and how futuristic things appear in the "outer space". Sure, it's an added advantage to know the Star Trek franchise beforehand but it's not a must do because this movie doesn't seem to have any linkage to its previous shows. Throwing in a 7.5/10 on my personal scale of movies, one where I would watch again if anyone did invite me for it. Thanks again for the tickets, Nuffnang. It was a good end to my week. (Yes my weeks ends on Thursdays now seeing as that I have no classes on Fridays!)

Till then everyone, live long and prosper! *Does the Spock gesture* Can you do it? :)

P/S: Dear GSC, why are your 3D glasses so sucky now? It hardly sits over my own glasses properly now! Bring back the old ones with the wrap around figure! At least that one doesn't just droop off my nose when I wear them over my glasses! I had to watch the movie with one hand holding up the 3D glasses throughout! ><
